Wow.
It really doesn't feel like that long ago that I was carrying two baby carriers into church (occasionally pushing the double stroller in, cuz I just couldn't handle both at one time alone) and watching them curl around each other in one crib. Now, we're breaking up fights over Bakugan and telling them they can't watch Sponge Bob anymore.
We've gone from painting their big toes to tell them apart to them automatically correcting us when we get the names wrong. (yes, I can't tell my own kids apart sometimes - they're a little too identical at times!)
They've gone from learning to walk to being told to quit running through the house.
They've gone from not being able to talk to singing their own made-up songs, yelling in celebration at sporting events and reading above current grade level.
I used to worry about making sure they were treated as "individuals" by teachers and even strangers and now I just wish they'd learn to share and not worry about what's "theirs".
They're such wonderful little boys and yet some days I wish I had my babies back. Wish that I could go back and fix some of the things I know I did wrong. Wish I could pick them both up at the same time and rock them to sleep. Heck, sometimes I'd just like to go back a couple years where I could pick ONE of them up!
I'm not really sure how we've gotten 7 years in the future already. It's just amazing to me. So, let's not mention how it is that I'll be 35 in a few weeks. I really don't want to know where all THOSE years have gone...

Runner's Tool
Here's a great website I just found where you just have to tap along to the song's beat and it will tell you average beats per minute:
http://www.all8.com/tools/bpm.htm
Pretty cool! Unless you don't know how to keep a beat. Then it might suck. ;-)
Interview with a Vampire...
Regardless of my human/vampiric nature, this is my "interview" - a little twist on the "about me" type posts that's sweeping the blog and FB worlds. Basically, someone posts their Q/A statements from someone, reader reads them then asks to be interviewed. Interviewee becomes interviewer and a cycle is henceforth perpetuated.
This particular set of questions comes from my co-worker/friend Amanda - my running mentor and a happiness guru. I'm assuming that once another friend reads these questions and asks to be interviewed, I ask them questions then I can turn-around and ask THEM to interview ME with their own questions. Interesting cycle and it can go on as long as people are willing to play and can think up different questions.
Personally, I'm going to add one caveat for my interviewees - you must answer quickly! Pretend you're sitting across from Barbara Walters or Katie Couric or some other annoying talk show host and that you're on live TV. No time to think of just the right answer or be sure it's Politically Correct or anything like that. I think that will make our answers a lot more insightful!
So, without further ado or gilding the lily, here's my first interview:
========================================
1.) What has running taught you about yourself?
Several things actually. First, that I'm seriously out of shape in addition to being overweight. Ugh. The past smoking thing has really decreased my lung capacity and that's the hardest thing for me to overcome physically right now. But, I've also learned that I'm stronger than I thought and that I have the fortitude to push forward even when I really don't want to. And I've learned that I need to look towards internal acceptance and support cuz I'm not going to get a lot of external support from the people closest to me. This is a truth I need to apply to more areas of my life than just running, but running is where I learned it and will first apply it. (BTW - the picture is of my actual running shoes. I love them!)
2.) Are you a risk taker or avoider and why?
I like to think of myself as a 'calculated-risk taker'. That usually gets me into trouble, but less than if I was an "all abandon risk taker". I've learned the worst thing that can happen is someone says no. Or I lose my job. Or I lose some material possession. Or I might break a body part or two. All of these are things that can be overcome or replaced or healed. However, when it comes to my family, I tend to be a little less of a risk-taker, cuz I can't replace them. I also don't like direct confrontation - too many experiences where verbal confrontation turned into a physical confrontation. If there's even a hint that something could switch from verbal to physical I avoid it. Except with my kids - I can still take them!
3.) What does spirituality mean to you?
wow...um. This is probably the hardest of the 5 questions for me. If the question had been more like "What does being a Christian mean to you?" I could spout off on that pretty easy. Spirituality is a lot harder to define for me. I guess it has to do with being at peace with oneself and with the world. Not necessarily a specific aspect of the world, but in general, just feeling in harmony with what's happening around one's self. For me, music, passion and praise are big parts of spirituality. All music is a passionate self-expression of something and that's the biggest defining piece of spirituality to me. And yeah, Amanda, I think I know where you were going with this one. That's assuming you had an "ulterior motive". But sometimes I think too much. :)
4.) If you could only listen to 1 song for all your runs what would it be?
'Bitch' by Meredith Brooks. It's actually my PowerSong on my iPod so I can grab it anytime I need a burst of adrenaline on my runs. It encompasses so much about being a strong self-assured woman and all the various roles a woman can play. I can relate each of the characteristics listed to myself, either right now or at sometime in my life. And honestly, I think a strong self-assured woman is that most real men want and that belief puts a kick in my step. Plus, it's just got a decent beat - 94 bpm in regular time or 188 in 'double-time'. :-) (View lyrics and hear a sound clip)
Bit of movie-music trivia (spoiler alert!) - this is the song Mel Gibson puts on when he's trying out the female products before he get electrocuted in 'What Women Want'. That's the first time I heard it and it's been a part of my life ever since!
5.) What makes you proudest as a parent? That's actually pretty easy to answer this week. I LOVE when my kids make positive comments to encourage others and help out those in need. Specific example, when Travis was sick this week, Thomas didn't whine about Travis getting out of chores or that he was getting more cuddle time. Instead, Thomas went and got him a bottle of water, a towel to "puke up on", stuffed animals, his pillow and another blanket. All without being asked or hinted at. He just got the things he likes when he's sick. Then, to top it off, he rubbed Travis' feet! How cool a brother is that? But, beyond the family/twin things, they do it for other people as well. They tell people they look nice (even when they don't particularly), they help with directions and schoolwork, and just generally try to take care of other people. That's my boys!
========================================
To play along:
1. Leave me a comment saying, "Interview me."
2. I will respond by emailing you five questions. ( I get to pick the questions).
3. You will update your blog with the answers to the questions.
4. You will include this explanation and an offer to interview others in the same post.
5. When others comment asking to be interviewed, you will ask them five questions.
HT: Car Wash, Broderick, Fridays, Starbucks, & Weekenders
So - here's today's list:
I like sitting in my car, in the dark letting the machine clean my car. Even if it is with recycled water. And the new car wash near me has the old-style spinning brushes and long "octopus" flapper thingies. Very childhood-memory inducing. I literally laughed out loud while I was in the car wash today!
Matthew Broderick movies
This afternoon I got to see "Project X" and "War Games". Haven't seen them in SUCH a long time. They're good society-conscious films (for the 80s anyway) and good memories from childhood. Seriously - remember modems where you had to put the handset on the base??
"Shall we play a game?"
Half-Day Fridays
Part of my job schedule allows me to be off at noon on Fridays. Whoo hoo! Some days I go shopping or see movies, others I come home and sleep for a few hours. Today, I got the car washed, read some, watched movies above and just generally decompressed. These hours completely for myself to be used at my discretion allow me to drop off the workweek and gear up for the weekend. Which is nice.
STARBUCKS Mistakes
Today I ordered a triple-shot venti white mocha. Since there's usually 2 shots in a venti, I was really just looking for another shot in it today. However, I think they literally made a TRIPLE VENTI - so, 6 shots. Yeah, 6 shots of espresso this morning in my coffee. No wonder I'm not napping right now! Maybe it's an artificial high I'm on, but it's something I'll remember for future down days - ask for a triple venti! :-)
Weekenders Cartoon
Seems silly I know, but when Travis got up this morning he put on the Weekenders (before breakfast was ready). This is one of the few cartoons my kids watch that I can actually stand to watch. Actually, I like it so much that instead of my typical "Charmed" morning marathon, I put the weekenders on the bedroom TV as well. And laughed out loud while I got ready this morning. Fun!

Happy Trail
The plan here is to write at least 5 things that have made me happy or lighthearted or even made me laugh out loud that day (or since the last time I posted). Sometimes we get so bogged down with the day to day of life and the bad things piling up around us, we forget to find joy in the little things. That's what these lists will help me remember to do.
Here's the first list to get us started on the Happy Trail:
- My current job duties. I haven't been happy in my job for awhile, mostly because I felt like I was seriously under-utilized. But, my new duties have made me busy AND challenged, so I was really happy today working on my newest project. Yes, happy working on Standard of Quality.
- Waking up my boys and they're HAPPY or EXCITED about the new day.
Seeing them embrace the day with exuberance and joy makes it so much easier for me to start the day the same way. I was so happy with them this morning, I made a weekend breakfast for them (weekend mornings are just made for big breakfasts, are they?). - Noodles & Co. Yeah, that one might seem weird to some of you, especially if you don't have one near you to know what I'm talking about. It's comfort food baby! I love their Parmesan Butter Noodles topped with Parmesan Crusted Chicken. And I had it today. YUM! Always good for a smile.
- Running outside. Since I haven't been able to run outside that much, it was so cool to do it tonight in the semi-warm weather. Completed 3.7 miles, which was even cooler since I haven't done anything in about 2 weeks due to a head/chest cold. Go me! Looks like I'll be set to do the Virtual Race on Saturday, assuming my body can handle 7 miles (I think my legs can do it, it's more a question of heart and lungs)! But, even if I walk it all, I can say I DID 7 miles!
- Finding my "voice" again. I realized that just because I'm not allowed to lead KidStuf anymore, doesn't mean there's not joy to be found in those songs and in the memories. and my kids still really enjoy these songs! This all hit home when I listened to "Here and Now" last night. (View Lyrics; sorry, due to copyright constraints I can't post the actual audio.) So on the way to and from work, at work, and on my run tonight I listened to a lot of the old kids songs. And I was really happy about that!
So - there you have it. That's what my Happy Trail posts will be like. I might not always go into detail like this, especially if it's something I've already said before. I think listing them like this so I can go back and read them again (while listening to Here and Now) will keep me on the Happy Trail!
Happy trails to you, until we meet again.
Happy trails to you, keep smilin' until then.
(yeah, that will probably be my regular sign off on these, too!) ;-)

Revelation
===============================================
Revelation
My life,
Has led me down the road that's so uncertain
And now I am left alone and I am broken,
Trying to find my way,
Trying to find the faith that's gone
This time,
I know that you are holding all the answers
I'm tired of losing hope and taking chances,
On roads that never seem,
To be the ones that bring me home
CHORUS
Give me a revelation,
Show me what to do
Cause I've been trying to find my way,
I haven't got a clue
Tell me should I stay here,
Or do I need to move
Give me a revelation
I've got nothing without You
I've got nothing without You
My life,
Has led me down this path that's ever winding
Through every twist and turn I'm always finding,
That I am lost again (I am lost again)
Tell me when this road will ever end
CHORUS
I don't know where I can turn
Tell me when will I learn
Won't You show me where I need to go
Oh oh
Let me follow Your lead,
I know that it's the only way that I can get back home
CHORUS
Oh, give me a revelation...
I've got nothing without You
I've got nothing without You

On My Coffee Cup #2
There is a subtle different between a mission and a promise. A mission is something you strive to accomplish - a promise is something you are compelled to keep. One is individual, the other is shared. When a mission and a promise are one and the same...that's when mountains are moved and races are won.
-- Hala Moddelmog, President and CEO, Susan G. Komen for the Cure
=================================
Another Starbucks coffee cup statement that hit close to home for me. As I am the Sponsorship Accounts (aka Pro Bono Accounts) leader at DEG, I understand the message here very well. I see these wonderful people who not only make a promise to help with cancer research or to help underprivileged children, but who actually make it their life's mission to keep that promise. If each of us choose one cause and promise to make the world better by supporting it and then make it a mission to fulfill that promise, how incredibly better the world might be!
